Purpose and Target Group

Purpose

This qualification reflects the role of workers who provide self-directed recovery oriented support for people affected by mental illness and psychiatric disability. Work involves implementing community-based programs and activities focusing on mental health, mental illness and psychiatric disability. Work is undertaken in a range of community contexts such as community based non-government organisations; home based outreach; centre-based programs; respite care; residential services, rehabilitation programs; clinical settings; or supporting people in employment. Work is carried out autonomously under the broad guidance of other practitioners and professionals.

To achieve this qualification, the candidate must have completed at least 80 hours of work as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of units of competency.

This course is targeted at domestic students who are seeking to work in the specialised field of mental health. The target group may have a nursing, or social work background who lack the work experience due to limited opportunities in their respective communities[TS1] .

This course also caters for students wishing to complete a mental health qualification as a pathway to higher levels of study.

Students interested in studying this course must have excellent people and problem-solving skills, able to work under pressure and have good judgment.

Entry Requirements

The training organisation requires that all students:

  • Are over the age of 18
  • Demonstrate an interest in, knowledge of, and suitability for work in the mental health industry.
  • Demonstrate the level of maturity required to be responsible for the care and support of older people.
  • Possess a police check (which is required for placement). This will be assessed during an interview conducted prior to enrolment.
  • Have a reasonable level of fitness in order to complete manual and physically demanding tasks, such as bending, lifting and standing for long periods of time.
  • Complete a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) assessment to demonstrate that they have the required level of LLN skills required by the course.
  • The LLN test will be conducted by a suitable Trainer and Assessor or the Training Manager.
  • Students must receive a satisfactory result before enrolling in the course.
  • The LLN assessment will be completed during an interview at the RTO.
  • The LLN test assists the RTO to assess whether or not students’ LLN skills are at a level suited to the course requirements. It also assists our trainers to prepare individual learning plans for each successful applicant where skill weaknesses are identified. The RTO will work with successful applicants to ensure their skills are at the required level by the completion of their training.

Level 4 (Certificate IV)

Purpose:
The Certificate IV qualifies individuals who apply a broad range of specialised knowledge and skills in varied contexts to undertake skilled work and as a pathway for further learning

Knowledge:
Graduates of a Certificate IV will have broad factual, technical and theoretical knowledge in a specialised field of work and learning.

Skills:

Graduates of a Certificate IV will have:

  • cognitive skills to identify, analyse, compare and act on information from a range of sources
  • cognitive, technical and communication skills to apply and communicate technical solutions of a non-routine or contingency nature to a defined range of predictable and unpredictable problems
  • specialist technical skills to complete routine and nonroutine tasks and functions • communication skills to guide activities and provide technical advice in the area of work and learning

 

Application:

Graduates of a Certificate IV will demonstrate the application of knowledge and skills:

  • to specialised tasks or functions in known or changing contexts
  • with responsibility for own functions and outputs, and may have limited responsibility for organisation of others
  • with limited responsibility for the quantity and quality of the output of others in a team within limited parameters

 

Volume of learning:

The volume of learning of a Certificate IV is typically 0.5 – 2 years. There may be variations between short duration specialist qualifications that build on knowledge and skills already acquired and longer duration qualifications that are designed as entry level requirements for work

Credit Transfer

Credit transfer (CT) can be granted for unit/s of competency with the same unit code and unit title. If there is discrepancy in unit code and/or unit title, in order for credit transfer to be granted, the new unit must be deemed equivalent as published on the National Training Register, www.training.gov.au. If a unit is deemed ‘non-equivalent’ on the National Training Register, Training 4 Work will be unable to grant credit transfer. In such cases, the student will be advised to apply for RPL.
